Designed Pianet

Ciemno

Ciemno [ćẽmno] is the 1970s Pianet transformed. It doesn’t sound like a piano. It doesn’t sound like Rhodes. It doesn’t sound like anything else. And that‘s the beauty of it.

Ciemno is an instant mood setter. It captures a soul of the 70s Hohner Pianet but with a twist. I sampled it humanly through a beautiful chain of three vintage limiters, three preamps, two rare EQs and a filter famously used by Karlheinz Stockhausen in an attempt to create an instrument that sounds like nothing else.
From dreamy soft tones to slightly driven louder dynamics, Ciemno is all about texture. Think Radiohead on a trip to Neverland.

Or don’t think at all. Make something great with it.

What makes it different?

Instead of sampling the Pianet as-is, I thought: what if I recorded the instrument through a crazy signal chain, transforming it into a thick, dreamy, textural abstractness? And that’s what I did. This instrument is not about docummenting the sound of the Pianet. Is about re-interpreting it with a certain result in mind.

I also decided to replace the release triggers (the sound of the keys being released) with samples from Lekko. I felt they sounded cooler than the rubbery ‘ploink’ sound of the real instrument.

And yes, there is noise, because - contrary to what we’re made to believe - it’s there where you record stuff. If you were wondering why most sampled instruments sound like liquid plastic, this is it - noise reduction sucks the tone and life away. If you hate noise, I’m sure there are other instruments that will fit your needs better.

Analogue sound
out of the box

Ciemno was recorded and processed using state-of-the-art, extremely rare outboard kit made between 1940s and 1960s. The idea is to offer an instrument that is already shaped with a particular result in mind.
You probably know that vintage kit sounds great, but this stuff is really as good as it gets. To keep it short - there’s no need to add a pile of analogue emulating plugins. The vibe is already there.
